Bank of China U.S.A. Continues Its Sponsorship of The Juilliard School
NewsBank of China U.S.A. (BOC U.S.A.), the oldest and largest Chinese bank in the U.S., is proud to announce that it will continue its sponsorship of The Juilliard School in the 2024-25 academic year. Launched in 2021 in honor of the Bank’s 40th anniversary of operations in the United States, BOC U.S.A.’s support of Juilliard celebrates a shared commitment to nurturing cross-cultural understanding and collaboration between the U.S. and China, as exemplified by The Tianjin Juilliard School in China.

BOC U.S.A. has once again funded a grant to support Juilliard’s Community Engagement programs in New York City public schools. These impactful initiatives bring free performances and arts education programs to hundreds of elementary school students annually and are essential to Juilliard’s commitment to cultivating citizen artists. BOC U.S.A.’s contribution will help the school to serve low- to moderate-income communities across New York City’s five boroughs as part of BOC U.S.A.’s ongoing corporate giving and community reinvestment efforts.

In recognition of this continued support, Juilliard named BOC U.S.A. as a corporate sponsor of its Baroque instrument ensemble’s first visit to China in October 2024. Juilliard415, the primary performance ensemble of the school’s graduate Historical Performance program, began the trip with a five-day residency at The Tianjin Juilliard School. The 14 participating students from the New York campus observed classes and studio rehearsals, engaged with resident faculty, and offered Tianjin students an introduction to performance styles and practices of 17th and 18th century European music. The residency culminated in a side-by-side rehearsal with students from both campuses and a public performance for Tianjin audiences (Oct. 13).
Next, Juilliard415 embarked on a multi-city tour of China that included performances at the China Conservatory in Beijing (Oct. 16), Jiangsu Performing Arts Center in Nanjing (Oct. 18), Jinji Lake Concert Hall in Suzhou (Oct. 19), and West Bund Museum in Shanghai (Oct. 20).
Robert Mealy, Director of Juilliard’s Historical Performance program, said of the experience, “The Juilliard415 trip to China was a truly life-changing event for all the students involved. With concerts in Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, and Shanghai and a teaching residency at the Tianjin Juilliard School, the Juilliard415 players had the opportunity to experience many different cities. The warm welcome from Chinese audiences inspired us all. Our students were wonderful ambassadors for Juilliard, and it was a joy to see them in action — not only as performers, but as teachers working with students at the Tianjin Juilliard School and the China Conservatory in Beijing.”
This project builds on BOC U.S.A.’s history of supporting first-time collaborations between Juilliard’s two campuses, including the 2021 virtual project Little Folk-Song Serenade, the 2023 live hybrid concert performance of Terry Riley’s In C, and the inaugural Juilliard-Tianjin Juilliard joint faculty recital in February 2024. In China, the bank’s Tianjin branch has also provided vital support to The Tianjin Juilliard School through a multi-year sponsorship. Both Juilliard and Bank of China are thrilled to be continuing this global partnership.
