Social Impact

We are committed to building an inclusive organization that represents the communities we serve. This effort is essential to creating a diverse workforce that brings together broad perspectives to meet the needs of our stakeholders.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

At BOC U.S.A., we are focused on fostering an environment that reflects the extraordinary range of cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives that represent our employees, their families, our customers, and our communities.

Creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace that invites creativity, fairness, development, and connection enables us to reach our full potential at BOC U.S.A. To meet our goals, we consider DEI in all aspects of employment and operations, fostering dignity and respect among the entire workforce, and comply with requirements for equal employment opportunity and anti-harassment and anti-discrimination laws.

  • Our Human Resources department organizes bank-wide DEI training programs for over 880 employees and contractors, covering self-awareness, and unconscious bias, to further promote the inclusiveness of employees in all aspects of the work environment.
  • We have established a Women’s Employee Resource Group (W-ERG) and elected a W-ERG leader to be the advocate and representative of the group. The W-ERG aims to provide a space for women to address and discuss workplace and career-related items. The W-ERG held a Women in Leadership panel discussion in September 2023.
  • Each year we host an International Women’s Day Celebration Event on March 8.
  • We have sponsored a representative to attend the Conference Board’s 2023 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Conference in June to upskill and stay abreast of industry practices.
  • We have also established a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy to demonstrate and further implement our commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.

Equal Opportunity Employer

BOC U.S.A. is an equal opportunity employer (EEO). We comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment, and are committed to equal employment opportunities for all qualified individuals, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, creed, alienage, age, physical or mental disability, protected military or veteran status, pregnancy, childbirth or pregnancy related medical conditions, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship status, genetic information or predisposition, genetic carrier status or any other status protected by applicable federal, state or local law.

This applies to all areas of employment, including recruitment, hiring, compensation, leaves of absence, recall, lay off, placement, Bank benefits, promotions, demotions, transfers, training, disciplinary action, termination, and all other privileges, terms, and conditions of employment.

Community and Social Impact

We put people first, and we pride ourselves on being a global bank with a local heart. In addition to caring for and empowering our employees, we strive to deliver value and implement change in the communities we serve outside the walls of BOC U.S.A. On a BOC Group level:

We enhance people’s well-being through increased access to housing, done primarily through real estate financing and increasing the supply of government-subsidized housing loans.

We continue to promote financial literacy and education, which continues to be an area of opportunity for many customers and consumers.

We provide greater access to education for students, parents, and educational professionals, including being one of the first commercial banks to undertake national student loans.

We create opportunities for artistic expression and exchange, as we know the arts are a universal form of communication and a way to engage people across generations, borders, and language.

We help people live healthier lives by advocating for healthy-living practices and providing health and medical insurance with affordability.

Over the years, BOC U.S.A. has invested and continues to seek out new opportunities in local communities through leading community organizations, including Big Brothers and Big Sisters of New York, Habitat for Humanity, Food1st, the Jump$tart Coalition, among others. Further, to enrich the cultural ties between the U.S. and China, we work closely with Asian Americans for Equality, the China General Chamber of Commerce U.S.A. and its Foundation, Chinatown Healthcare Clinic Foundation, and the Sino-U.S. Business Leaders Roundtable.

We proudly provide financial support for 80/20 low-and moderate-income housing projects in the New York metropolitan area and provide loans (both public finance and corporate), investments and services under our Community Reinvestment Act program that exceeded $3 billion between 2012-2023. A global bank with a local heart

Of the many ways BOC U.S.A. partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York, we’re especially proud of our Workplace Mentorship Program. This program, which began in 2018, matches bank employees to underserved and underprivileged youth in and around New York. Topics of mentorship vary by individual, but include financial literacy, STEM, banking, and other topics as needed.

A JOURNEY WITH MY LITTLES

I am always passionate about making a positive impact on young people’s lives. Over the years, I have been an active participant of Bank of China – Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC Workplace Mentorship Program. The program takes place every two weeks during the school year, where “Bigs” (mentors) provide one-on-one mentoring to their “Littles” (mentees). As a Big, I provide guidance and advice around topics including effective communication, resume writing, teamwork, college preparation, work place ethics, financial literacy, and professional development.

The program has truly been a wonderful journey that allowed me to grow through this very unique experience. Over the past several years, I have developed a trusting relationship with my “Little” that goes beyond mentorship. She is such a hard-working girl with admirable strength and unique qualities that allowed her to navigate life’s many challenges and continue to inspire me every day. I witnessed incredible resilience and tremendous potential within her, and I am proud to be her mentor and see her grow and succeed. My experience with the Bank of China – Big Brothers Big Sisters program has broadened my horizons and enhanced my ability to empathize with others in new and meaningful ways. I’m thankful that my place of employment has afforded me with this special opportunity.
